How to get a Pet Passport

September 28, 2009

To help with allowing pets into the UK and also allowing them to travel around the European Union without having to go into quarantine the government requires they have a pet passport. The passport is issued by a government-authorised vet known as a local Veterinary Inspector (LVI) if your local veterinary surgery does not have a registered LVI working with them they should be able to give you the contact details for one in your area.

At the time of writing this article DEFRA the government department responsible for the overseeing of pet passports does not charge a fee for the passport, although you should check this yourself as with all information it is subject to change with out prior warning.

To get the passport your pet must have a microchip fitted, this is lodged under the skin and allows vets and government officials to scan the animal to check that it is the same one documented on the pet passport.
After the microchip has been fitted your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. There is no exemption to this requirement, even if your pet has a current rabies vaccination.
The final part of the procedure is a blood test; the test is to check that the vaccine has given your pet the correct level of protection against rabies.

Once you have the pet passport you can leave the UK for any European Union country but you must wait for 6 months after the blood sample that showed clear was taken before you can bring your pet back into the UK. This does not mean that you need to keep your pet out of the country for 6 months it just means that you should plan ahead, if you know that you plan to go to France until the beginning of September you should have had the blood test cleared by the previous February, it is a case of planning ahead.

Your vets should be able to help with all of the points outlined above, but I hope that this has given you a clearer guide to what you need to do, the passport is valid for two years for entry back in to the UK from the date of the vaccination although some other countries only give a year, so it is better to get it done sooner rather than later, to check for the latest details the DEFRA website is http://www.defra.gov.uk and there contact details can be found there.

So Your Dog Messed on the Carpet Again

September 21, 2009

Before you chastise your dog for messing on the carpet, bear in mind that we all needed to learn to use the toilet at one time.

House Training Your Dog may be one of the hardest grounding techniques as it is the one that requires the highest effort on your part. You have to be competent to interpret your dogs body language which reveals when he requires a toilet break.

The main requirements on your part are patience and repetition of a consistent action plan.

Numerous dog owners make the assumption that their dog will bark whenever he requires to go to the loo. Occasionally you may be fortunate to discover a dog that will, but believe me most will not, and accidents will be discovered all over the house!

The sooner you start, the sooner your dog will be doing its business in the correct place so lets get started. Firstly I would propose putting paper in front of the door. That way, if you see him making a mess in the residence you can rapidly lift the animal on to the paper and he will realise that if he has to take a toilet break, and you are not there, he must do it on paper.

The next thing you need to understand when house training your dog is that most dogs when requiring the toilet will often get agitated and start sniffing around. At this time, you should take them outside.

When they are quite young you should take them out of the house often, perhaps every hour. When you take them outside you can say things such as “do your business” or whatever order you desire to use for going out to the toilet. Once they have finished, you should reward them immediately with lots of kindness.

The dog will soon come to realise that outside is the location to use as a toilet and will then commence letting you know when it needs to go out.

Remember, no dog is going to comprehend immediately that outside is the place to use. It is up to you to instruct them , with patience, kindness and consistent repetition of action as your main objectives.

About Pet Services

September 14, 2009

If you were to sit down and make a list of all the pet services available to pet owners, it would take you an eternity. If you have an issue concerning your pet, no matter what kind of animal you have, chances are, there is someone close by to help you with a solution, so there is no need to worry yourself. Pet services, in general, can mean a lot of things to different people. There are also different services depending on the genre of pet you have. Typically, the more popular the type of pet, the more services you will find to help you with your concerns.

Most providers of pet services are pet lovers, and they are doing what they do with the inerest of the animal in mind. Unfortunately, sometimes the need for pet services arises due to a bad situation, such as a lost pet or an abused pet, and they neeed to be rescued. Animal rescue and animal shelters are among the most important of them all, and are there to help control the population of stray animals, and ultimately to save lives. It’s a shame that most of these types of pet services are non-profit organizations, because they often cannot hold on to these animals for ever. If you are looking to get a pet, this is where you will find animals that are up for adoption. Some of the animals have been abandoned, lost or abused, and they really need someone to take them in and take care of them.

As we stated earlier, rescue shelters are just one variation of pet services there to help with pet concerns. Maybe you need someone to take your dog for a walk, or you need to learn how to groom your pet, or your parrot needs medical help. Other examples of pet services can include providers of pet insurance, dog training, pet boarding for when you are out of town, or even breeders. If you need to know more about pet services, or you are seeking pet advice, this is a great place to start. We have put forth this resource to help people with their pet needs, and we hope that you have found it useful.

Preventing Parasitic Diseases in Pets

September 7, 2009

Internal and external parasites are responsible for the vast majority of illnesses and disorders seen in dogs. The common dog flea is the number one health problem facing these pets. Chewing and scratching are the common signs of a flea “allergy” caused when a dog is bitten by a flea and the allergy develops and continues even after the fleas are long gone. Fleas are also disease carriers and can threaten the dog’s health as well.

If you’ve tried all the powders, sprays, and shampoos, you might want to get a more dedicated treatment. The three products most used by Veterinarians are Program, Advantage, and Frontline. The really great thing about all three products is that each is dedicated to one purpose, elimination fleas, and you only need to use them once a month.

The oldest of these medications is Program. It is an oral drug that affects only the flea, not your pet. It works by sterilizing the flea so that no more young are produced. Since flea larvae make up over 50% of the flea population, this is very effective at breaking the flea life cycle. After 60 to 90 days, (2-3 treatments), Program will reach its maximum effectiveness, and will only need one treatment each month thereafter to maintain.

Advantage and Frontline are topical products that are placed on the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. They then spread over you pet’s body and will paralyze and then kill any flea coming in contact with the product. These flea products are especially useful for those pets that are flea allergic, as the flea doesn’t have to bite to be eliminated.

Advantage eliminates fleas within 12 hours after contact, before they lay eggs to prevent re-infestation. It has a waterproof formula that won’t wash off and continues working even when the dog gets wet. Frontline comes in 2 forms, regular Frontline, and Frontline Plus. Both Frontline formulas are waterproof, but have the added benefit of eliminating ticks as well. While regular Frontline kills both fleas and ticks for up to 1 month, Frontline Plus continues to kill fleas for up to 3 months.

All the products mentioned are safe for your pet and have been used by Veterinarians for many years. In addition, Program can be used along with either of the topicals for complete protection. Most Veterinarians recommend Program for year round use, and then add Advantage or Frontline during the worst of the flea season (April to October).
