Ringworm And Your Pets - What To Look For

December 29, 2008

As hard as it may be to believe, ringworm can affect your pets. Ringworm in dogs and cats is more common than you might think. Worse yet, it’s also possible for your cat to pass it onto you, but don’t freak out, it’s rarely the case. And while the thought of ringworm may not be a pleasant one, it really isn’t a worm though, it’s a fungus. Let’s take a closer look at how ringworm gets started in your pets to begin with and what to look out for.

There are basically three forms of ringworm in dogs or cats, and every breed of dog or cat is susceptible to getting it. One type is found in rats. How can that affect my dog or cat? If your pet were to touch the rat, or dig around in its home, it could easily get ringworm. Another type is found in the soil. And the third type is found in cats only.

While ringworm on people will have a tell tale reddish colored ring shaped rash, on animals there is no set pattern. It can look completely different. This can make it difficult to know that it is ringworm.

So, how do you know if you have ringworm in dog or cat? Many people just assume that if their pet is itching a lot it is from having a few fleas. Makes sense, but you should take a closer look if they continue scratching on a frequent basis as this could be a sign of ringworm. Look for bumps on their skin, or hair loss around places where they have been scratching. This is a good indication of ringworm in your pet.

If you find that your pet appears to have ringworm, take it to the vet and have it checked out. The last thing you want to do is to blow it off and then have it spread and take the risk of getting it yourself. It’s easily treated by a vet. They can give your pet a dip, or a special shampoo, and possibly a cream to put on the area infected. A vet can also answer any other questions you might have. You might also look in a pet supply store at medicine for ringworm. in dog or cat. Products containing Ketoconazole are recommended for dogs, and Itraconazole for cats.

Vets agree that treatment should continue for eight weeks, no matter how much better your pet is doing after only a few weeks. This is important due to the fact that the fungal spores from ringworm can exist for many weeks. Don’t forget to treat your home at the same time you are treating your pet. Some believe that ringworm spores can live in your carpet for up to two years. Be sure to thoroughly clean your home. Vacuum your carpet and then change out your bag.

By simply following a few of these steps, and being aware of the situation, will help prevent any further complications. While the problem may seem like a real pain, you don’t have to let ringworm in dog or cat get you down.

Pet Bereavement

December 22, 2008

Home Burial or Cremation

When your pet dies you will need to decide whether to bury or cremate the remains. In cases, such as terminal illness, where death has been long-expected, it is a good idea to plan how to deal with your pet in advance.

Our pet coffins & urns are manufactured to the very highest standards to produce lasting memento for those you have loved and cherished. Our range is based on over a decade of experience providing suitable tributes for many beloved pets. There is a wide variety of styles, shapes and finishes, from simple wooden containers to sculptured ones, to suit your pet and the surroundings in which the tribute will be placed designed to cater for the smallest pet to the largest all sharing two common factors - quality of construction and design. Our pet coffins and Caskets are built to give an enduring, attractive container for your pet’ aptly reflecting your love and respect.

Garden Burials

A burial allows you to mark the plot where your beloved pet lies with a memorial. When you gaze upon it, fond memories of the good times you had with your pet will return. Of course, even if you opt for cremation you can similarly mark the plot where the ashes lie, or keep them in an urn.
The most popular and perhaps economical means is the home burial, though for many people without a garden or large open space available to them this is not an option. A home burial enables you to tend for your pet just that little longer and helps ward off that helpless feeling by giving you something active to do, for instance choosing a location under a tree or by a wall where you can dig the grave. You may prefer to include a memento such as a favourite toy, photos or a rose with your pet’s remains.

The thought of your pet lying close by can be comforting and the grave (including the physical work involved digging it) can help you face up to the reality of your loss, It is also a place where you can go and talk to your pet, which helps the healing process, Indeed, this tending of a grave, especially if there is a memorial or grave marker in place, may help you do away with the need for any kind of bereavement counselling or grief therapy.

Burial should be completed as soon as possible after death, because of the inevitable putrefaction. A friend of mine on many occasions prefers to keep their pet’s remains overnight in the house - to be close to them for one final time - before burying him or her the next morning in the garden.
Make sure there is at least three feet of soil between the top of the casket and the ground; this will prevent other animals digging up the grave. It is also a good idea when backfilling to compact the ground at levels of, say, a foot to prevent settlement. A temporary paving slab, or something similar, offers further protection. Once buried, you are not allowed by law to exhume the animal.

Giving Your Pets Pills

December 15, 2008

For many pet owners when it comes time to give your animals medication, whether it be a monthly worming tablet or other pill recommended by a vet, just the thought of knowing the troubles to come can be enough to start you worrying.

For some lucky dog an cat owners though there is no problem at all, they can simply hold the tablet out and their pet will happily eat whatever is put in front of them, others are not so lucky, and what should be a two minute process soon turns into half an hour of scratching, clawing and screaming and that’s just the owner.

If you have problems giving your dog or cat tablets here’s some tips that may help a little:

For smaller dogs and cats, try wrapping them in a towel or blanket and then hold securely between your knees if possible.

When holding your pets mouth open to administer the tablet, first and foremost, be calm yourself (it’s always a good idea to try this from an early age, to get them used to having their mouth held open) and place the tablet as far as possible to the back of the mouth. To ensure the tablet is swallowed you can try dripping water in their mouth which will make them swallow or holding their mouth closed and rubbing under their throat.

Some owners may try hiding the pill in their pets food, and on some occasions this will work, on others the animal will eat everything around it until there is nothing but a lonely tablet sitting at the bottom of their feed bowl.

You can try covering the pill in cheese or other sticky type food substance like butter (never use human chocolate as this can be fatal for animals) or if they have a particular pet treat they like try mixing it with that.

Several brands of worming tablets for example are now flavoured so perhaps try changing brands - as always check with your vet.

You can also check your local vet or pet store to see if there an any alternative methods of getting your pet to take pills - pill pushers for example.

These are just a few tips that you may want to try the next time you need to give your dog or cat a tablet.
